What is Pilates?
Pilates is a complete conditioning system, using safe and body-friendly exercises to target the deep postural muscles. Mobilising, stabilising and stretching the body, the technique offers a total mind-body workout that improves posture, balance and co-ordination.
The low impact exercises are easy on joints and emphasise movement quality and flow. Developed and refined by Joseph Pilates over his lifetime, he described his method as integrating body, mind and spirit and promoted exercise quality over quantity. No longer the exclusive domain of dancers and athletes, Pilates is for everyone!
Who is Pilates for?
Whether your focus is on rehabilitation, general conditioning / fitness or pre/post natal support throughout your pregnancy, Pilates can be adapted to fit the needs of each person. Any fitness level and age is welcome.
What are the benefits?
With regular practice, Pilates is known to:
- Improve posture and alignment
- Develop long, strong and toned muscles
- Correct muscular imbalances
- Maintain healthy joints
- Enhance breathing
- Heighten body awareness
- Improve balance and proprioception
- Reduce stress
- Alleviate chronic pain
- Support you through pregnancy
For Pregnancy
Pilates can both prepare your body for birth as well as aid recovery afterwards. Practising throughout your pregnancy strengthens the deep abdominals and pelvic floor muscles, which are put under great strain often resulting in back and pelvic pain.
Women usually return to Pilates around 4-6 weeks after birth (on the advice of a doctor) to regain body tone, strength and create stamina for the new demands of motherhood!
Pilates Principles
Drawing from both Eastern and Western philosophies, Pilates promotes a balanced approach to exercise which focuses on;
Flowing movement
Concentration
Alignment
Breathing
Centering
Precision
Control
